The Retreat

The kind of place that takes a moment to find and a while to leave

Alula sits on 12 private acres inside a recognised bird sanctuary — the largest privately held property in the park. It feels like being completely in nature. The hideaway is a standalone building on the property, furnished with quiet, considered luxury — handmade objects, original artwork.

The outdoor artisanal concrete bath sits among native plants and grasses, facing the bushland. You'll use it at night with a glass of wine from the property's own vineyard and not want to be anywhere else.

Kangaroos come to the trough each evening. Migratory shorebirds pass overhead on ancient flyways. Honeyeaters and wrens move through the property at dawn. The property sits along one of Australia's major bird migration routes — this is their land, and you're the guest.

Walk ten minutes on a sandy path through the conservation park and you're on the beach. Silver Sands Beach Club and the Victory Hotel are close by. A private shala on the property hosts ongoing yoga classes and massage. McLaren Vale's wineries are ten minutes inland.

Alula is the small feather on a bird's wing that makes landing possible. A tiny structure, precisely placed, that allows a bird to slow down and arrive. That's what this place is for.
